Editor's Notes and Ramblings

Dear Clay Friends,

I have some exciting news for you!

I've been getting a lot of emails from Clay Friends readers asking me how to slump bottles in a pottery kiln.

So today I decided to share some tips and techniques I personally use.

Hope you use them and enjoy an increase in your income, too!

Until next time...

Best wishes,
Sue

Bottle Slumping is HOT!

  1. The first thing you need to do is remove the label from your bottle.

  1. Next be sure to wash and dry your bottle completely.

  2. Use a mold that has been pre-treated with glass separator. Separator should be reapplied between firings as needed.

  3. Bottles with painted labels are great, but in addition to the glass separator, use a thin sheet of fiber paper under the part where the label comes in contact with the molds surface, otherwise the bottle might get stuck to your mold.

To fire without a digital pyrometer in a ceramic kiln: fire to cone -017

on slow 1.5 hours, medium speed for 1.5 hours, then turn the kiln to high until the cone falls.

If you have a vent don't use it - unless you need to use the fiber paper
(it stinks a little when you first start the kiln)

Once the kiln shuts off, turn the exhaust fan off to cool as slow as possible and don't peek till the kiln reaches room temperature.

A firing in my kiln with the digital pyrometer - takes about 4 hours and then another 12 or more to cool down.

Let me know how things work out, I would love to see some pictures of your projects in action!

Good luck!
Sue
