The year was 1971. I was sitting in my attic/studio at the new
easel that my brother had just given me for my 16th birthday; dreamin’
of one day becoming a real artist. Little did I know that it would be
another 30+ years before I would realize my childhood dream!
Fast forward to the first class that I attended at the
Mechanicsburg Art
Center School & Galleries.
The gifted Peggy Wilson Long was my instructor. I still remember the first
question she posed to the class. “Has anyone here NEVER touched clay
what-so-ever?” My lonely hand eked its way up. From that day Peggy took me under
her wing and began to shape me and mold me as she would any raw piece of
potter’s clay. At the end of our class, Peggy lifted her wing like a good
mother bird; sent me out to explore and experience the vast world… of
Art.
At Peggy’s prompting I began the adventure I had dreamt of so
long ago; college art classes. As a non traditional student at the
HACC
Center for Art and Technology, I enrolled in the
Contemporary
Crafts Marketing program. It would prove to be one of the best decisions that I have
ever made; right up there with marrying my husband Jim, who has encouraged and
supported me every step of the way.
I truly appreciate everyone who has befriended me along the way and
are so willing
to share their personal experiences with me. If you are
considering a career in art please do yourself a favor and visit
HACC, it is a great school! The
technology Center is one of the best kept secrets of the Harrisburg MidTown
phenomena. Trust me. You won’t regret it!
